The inspiration for my two-dimensional mixed media art comes from my sense of place, its wildness, and the contrasts within this landscape. I use the horses and birds, to which I’m most attracted and familiar with, as vehicles to explore the overlapping edges of diverse cultures. I’m interested in continuing my recent works, influenced by the compositions and palettes of early Japanese art, into which I’ve integrated the flora and fauna of the American West. I endeavor to create well-constructed, colorful paintings, full of details hidden in plain sight, and made with solid craftsmanship.
I’m challenged by the juxtaposition of organic form against the hard-lines and symmetry of traditional patterns. After carefully constructing these more complex elements, I love the chaos of finishing each piece with thrown paint. I’m also passionate about collecting images of graffiti from trains to use in my palette. I love its subversive nature, the energy of its color and line, and the strength of its design - an unexpected, diverse, under-appreciated art and culture, hidden in plain sight.
I want my art to engage across demographics of age, race, and social class. I believe when we allow ourselves to be more curious about what interests us on a visceral level, we allow ourselves to crack open and see the nuanced beauty of unexpected synchronicities. I want my art's power to be in the conversations, the connections, and the belonging it invites. I want it to inspire curiosity, to make people feel safe enough to follow that curiosity - and to ask questions.
Ultimately, I want my art to be an invitation: to embrace our diversity, and to see that what we have in common is greater than what divides us.
